Course Learning Outcome:

At the end of the course, the candidates will acquire knowledge and skills to help develop
strategies and policies for clinicians and policymakers for the prevention and control of cancer
at treatment centres and communities.

Outline of the course

A. Prevention of cancer

    1. Education Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer (of high prevalence rates,
      such as Lung Cancer, Cervical Cancer, Oral Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Bowel Cancer and
      Breast Cancer)
    2. Screening for early detection, mainly using non-invasive techniques
    3. Community Involvement in Cancer Prevention for awareness development and early reporting
    4. Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) – Generic and Clinical

B. Cancer Screening

  1. Appropriate treatment management strategies for reducing the risk of complications and co-morbidities
  2. Ensuring strategies for a better prognosis
  3. Cost-effective management strategies of palliative care services

Learning Objectives:

Upon completing this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Describe the epidemiology of common cancers
  • Discuss the major risk factors of common cancers
  • Learn the procedures of screening and diagnosis of different cancers
  • Identify effective strategies for cancer prevention and control at the population level

Strategies and actions on-

  1. Possible preventive measures for not starting cancer (primary prevention).
  2. Reducing the rate of cancer progression and complications once started (secondary prevention)
  3. Increasing the duration for cancer survivors
  4. Ensuring quality of life (QoL) after treatment and palliation.
